Cialis contains tadalafil, a selective PDE5 inhibitor. By inhibiting PDE5, tadalafil enhances nitric-oxide-mediated blood flow to penile tissue during sexual stimulation.
Tadalafil is primarily used for erectile dysfunction and is also available in appropriate formulations for benign prostatic hyperplasia and pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Its comparatively long duration of action distinguishes tadalafil from some other medicines in the same class. Nitrates must not be combined with tadalafil because of the risk of significant hypotension. Cardiovascular history and interacting medicines should also be reviewed.
