Cialis contains tadalafil, a selective phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor. By inhibiting PDE5, tadalafil enhances the nitric-oxide-mediated blood-flow response involved in penile erection when sexual stimulation occurs.
Tadalafil is primarily associated with treatment of erectile dysfunction and is also used in appropriate formulations and dosing for benign prostatic hyperplasia and pulmonary arterial hypertension. Its relatively long duration distinguishes it pharmacologically from some other PDE5 inhibitors.
Cialis should not be combined with nitrate medicines because the combination can cause a dangerous reduction in blood pressure. Cardiovascular history and other medicines should also be considered before treatment.
