Tesamorelin is a synthetic analogue of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH). It acts on GHRH receptors in the pituitary gland, stimulating the release of endogenous growth hormone.
Tesamorelin has an established medical application for reducing excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy. It is not a general-purpose replacement for growth hormone and does not work by directly supplying recombinant HGH.
Treatment can affect insulin sensitivity, fluid balance, and levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Appropriate clinical monitoring is therefore important.
