Arimidex contains anastrozole, a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor. By inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, anastrozole reduces the conversion of androgens into estrogen.
Its principal established use is the hormonal treatment of estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal patients. It may be used as part of adjuvant or advanced-disease treatment depending on clinical circumstances.
Reduced estrogen levels may contribute to joint discomfort, hot flashes, vaginal symptoms, and reduced bone mineral density. Bone health and other treatment-related factors can therefore require monitoring.
