Dostinex contains cabergoline, an ergot-derived dopamine agonist with a strong and prolonged effect on dopamine D2 receptors. Dopamine normally inhibits prolactin secretion from the pituitary gland, so stimulating these receptors can reduce circulating prolactin.
Cabergoline is used for the treatment of hyperprolactinemia, including conditions associated with prolactin-secreting pituitary adenomas. Lowering prolactin can help address reproductive and endocrine abnormalities caused by excessive prolactin production.
Potential adverse effects include nausea, dizziness, headache, and low blood pressure. Longer-term or higher-dose treatment can require additional assessment for cardiac valvular effects.
